Rebecca MacKinnon:"I am not saying that this situation justifies censorship in any way. But if you're Chinese, you’re not going to get anywhere by openly defying or opposing it. Instead, people are creatively making the best of the situation."

Rebecca MacKinnon: "The majority of Chinese users and pretty much all web entrepreneurs believe that the Chinese Web 2.0 must remain as un-political as possible in order to develop, spread, and innovate."

Rebecca MacKinnon: "Since people in China have never been free to express their political views in public, not being able to do so in cyberspace isn't actually viewed as a sacrifice."

Rebecca MacKinnon: "So they're a bit bewildered that the Western media focuses mainly on that portion of speech that remains forbidden, while from the Chinese perspective the story is a very positive one about how they're saying and doing more than ever before."

Portnoy:

these paragraphs are not as corresponding as they looked. lemme try to translate sayonly's paragraph:

sayonly: I felt the human beings are born unequal and not free, therefore the government should effort more on eliminating the HuKou (sorry that there's such a word in the western world, maybe something like a Working Permit?) to save the farmer's life. During the procedure there could be some mistakes and lots of wrong judgement. Comparing with this importance (of saving the farmers), the problem of free speech is the people's own problem.

This is already a kind of political view (and in public). I'll add some of my own point of view as an interpretation - look how everybody could interpret the free speech - people are born unequal and not free economically: it's like a buddhism tradition. You don't have anything when you come to this world - no nothing, no choice, no education (by CCP or by Berkeley). In Chinese culture there's such a thing of being thankful for what you get from this world. So the sub-content-context is that everything you could rely on is yourself. That's how average Chinese learnt not to take everything for granted. Nah, the government is not in the consideration at all yet - if they did something good, then they have good method and we thank them. If they did something bad - fuck them but the 10manyzeros people gotta to live on, right?
So lot of people are born in the countryside of China, they haven't being asked - if they have a choice, it must okay to be born in a lawyer family in New York. Being able to drink cocktail and talk shits in this society. How about to be a kid growing up in the People's Park? Wait lemme take my medicines first. Wow that feels wonderful, too! Please remember that everybody only got several dozens' years to live. We're probably not born so educated as the government's officers are, so why bother start a logic fight with them while i could enjoy my life or while i have to struggle my life out? It would be a total waste of life. Once i got the chance to do some free speech, i'll tell the government to legitimite the prostistute industry - it's certainly made me feel better to fuck a prostistute than to fuck the government.
Sorry very much for the dirty word - it's only a sample of free speech. It is free so it cannot be perfect, just like life itself. Since people asked for free speech (supposing Rebecca is not asking it for herself), then someone gotta listen to the free speech, you know what, the government would not care it at all since they know nobody would listen at all. That's how the free speech became jabbered word - the one who would listen to it only listen to it to manipulate it.
