Oni Vitandham, founded PUAA, the Foundation for Cambodia in 1995. She is a songwriter with two CDs and is a first-time author. Her book, On the Wings of a White Horse: Story of Surviving the Khmer Rouge Genocide, will be released by Tate Publishing on April 25th, 2006. She is currently working on her second book.

PUAA runs fourteen schools in Cambodia that provides children with training in the English language and computers. PUAA schools also offer children comprehensive information about the prevention of HIV/AIDS.

Through her own personal experiences, Oni became aware of the difficulties facing the Cambodian people as a result of political corruption and scandal. Even though she began as just one lonely voice in the multitudes, she believed that she could do something to help her people recover from the many years of turmoil they had experienced. With the help of her friend and mentor, the late Robert Lewis Simpson, she began a letter-writing campaign, writing letters about horrific human rights abuses taking place in Cambodia to the President of the United States, the American Red Cross, The United Nations, The US State Department and other heads of state around the world. She received many replies, but saw no action taken. Undeterred, she promised to continue writing her letters until action was taken to help Cambodia. Through her persistence and courage, PUAA, the Foundation for Cambodia was formed and has since become a champion for the future of the Khmer people. She recently enjoyed the esteemed privilege of speaking on behalf of millions of children before the International Conference of Chief Justices of the World and at the Global Symposium of 56 Countries. Through her own personal journey, she has realized the importance of defending the rights of children, as she was once a forgotten orphan herself. She continues to plead that those who are in a position to affect change do all they can to use the power of their office to help the children of Cambodia.

Oni continues to seek out support from the Cambodian community. Her first-hand experiences have given her the understanding and compassion necessary to identify the needs of Cambodia for the improvement of the quality of life there. Her direct knowledge of the devastation of three decades of war and exploitation in Cambodia has affected her personally as well as socially, and has given her a strong sense of conviction to respond to the continuing political crisis in Cambodia. Oni believes that the first step toward bringing vitality back to Cambodia is to bring the Khmer Rouge to trial and to hold those responsible for the atrocities committed there accountable for their actions. In the future, Oni imagines a Khmer culture that embraces democracy and free speech. Currently, the Cambodian government suffers from years of corruption and Vietnamese economic sanctions and the country’s people live in dire poverty. Twelve years ago, Oni submitted resolutions to the US government and the United Nations regarding the Khmer Rouge genocide in Cambodia and calling for a trial in an international court of law. The representatives contacted were unwilling to sponsor these resolutions. But she has not given up hope that one day Cambodia will begin to heal when it is finally given justice.

PUAA, the Foundation for Cambodia, is a struggling, non-profit organization. Many applications for government grants have been denied. PUAA is a grassroots organization that seeks to shine the light of peace over the entire Cambodian population. Oni’s book, On the Wings of a White Horse, is a part of that grassroots movement. It was written in an attempt to bring attention to the devastation experienced by and still facing the people of Cambodia today. She will continue her quest for justice, undeterred by threats of violence, and hopes that one day many will join her in her efforts to restore Cambodia.
